ABSTRACT: Research In Motion is a small information technology firm located in Waterloo, Ontario. This case describes how this firm came to develop a new-to-the-market product and offers the opportunity to discuss the challenges a small firm faces in commercializing a new technology. Issues relevant to this case are legitimacy of a firm and technology, the implications of technology standards, network effects and complementary goods, and partners and social capital as resources.
