Between-year survival and rank transitions in male black-capped chickadees

In this longterm study of black-capped chickadees we examined the relationship between social rank and year-to-year survival. Survival was year-dependent but was influenced by social rank, higher ranking individuals being more likely to survive. Rank transitions were age-dependent with younger low-ranking individuals being less likely to advance in rank than older low-ranking individuals.
