In this longterm study, we examined the factors associated with advancement in social rank and lifetime reproductive success in black-capped chickadees. Age was the best predictor of rank and lifetime reproductive success. Social rank was an important determinant of realised reproductive success for males. Individuals who lived longer and attained high social rank earlier had higher fitness.
