Wedley vs. Assessor of Area 08

W.C. Wedley

published: 2006 | Case Study | Accounting/Finance

Subject Area:    Accounting/Finance

Key Issues:    Multiple regression; Goods and services tax; Market valuation; Statistical analysis

Case Description:    The Wedley's purchased a new residence and were subsequently assessed at market value plus Canada's Goods and Services Tax. They objected claiming that including G.S.T. causes double taxation. Moreover, the G.S.T. is a tax on market value not part of that value.  To win their appeal, they must prove that GST is not part of value or that they have been assessed unfairly.  Multiple regression and other statistical techniques can be used to analyze the data that the Wedley's collected.
