Case Description: SecureHome, Inc., is a 5-year-old company
that produces products in the residential security systems market. Its
products protect homes and small businesses from unauthorized entry,
detect fires, and respond to other emergencies. Although the firm is 5
years old, it is still a "start-up" firm. Its first two years were
spent in research and development. Product sales began in 1985 and, by
October 1988, are at the $1 million per year level. However, while
developing a technologically sophisticated product, the firm has not
developed an overall business strategy or functional area strategies to
guide its growth. The case was designed to provide MBA students with
the opportunity to study the same firm in depth in at least four
different functional/course areas and to examine how functional area
decisions affect each other.
