Key Issues:    International sourcing; Organizational structure; Countertrade; Business policy

Case Description:    The SEARS WORLD TRADE INC. (A) case deals with the events that led to the creation of a world trading company.  Reports and data have been gathered from public sources to present the corporate moves to position Sears to enter the trading business.  As the largest world merchandiser, it was a ""natural"" step for Sears to start a company that would capture goods and services from companies that dealt in international countertrade, barter and buybacks.  The company had a shaky beginning and losses began to accumulate.
