Point of Sales System: Is It Right for Levi Home Hardware?

David Hemsworth, Cristobal Sanchez-Rodriguez

published: 2006 | Case Study | MIS

Subject Area:    MIS

Key Issues:    Information Systems; Project evaluation

Case Description:    Levi Home Hardware is a small hardware store in Almonte, Ontario, owned by John Levi, but managed by his son Tom. At the present time, Tom is considering the implementation of an MIS. First of all, Tom must decide if he wants to put in a Point of Sale (POS) system or instead purchase additional Palm Pilots to assist with inventory ordering. If he chooses the POS system, Prism and Dimensions offer the two possible systems. The decision will be made on financial benefits of the system, as well as qualitative considerations including employee acceptance, inventory tracking and changes in customer service. Implementation of a POS system will have major implications on the culture of the company and potentially this is a case where an IS should not be chosen.
