Key Issues:    System selection and justification

Case Description:    A small (70 employee) non-profit organization is facing increasing demands on their information and office support systems. Currently a time share service handles their accounting and therapy statistics, but all typing is done by electric typewriter. The number of clerical staff has remained constant for many years, while the volume of work has grown substantially; government reporting requirements continue to increase, while their database software has reached the "spaghetti code" state and needs replacing.  Management wants to purchase a networked microcomputer system, but the Board of Directors has told them they do not know enough to proceed.
