Case Description: Sr. managers at COM DEV Space
Group are facing a daunting change challenge. To date, their
success has come from the ability of engineers and scientists to create
innovative engineering solutions to satellite communications problems
for which no known solutions existed. Competitive conditions
developing suggest that the costs of satellite products will be forced
down and the volume forced up over the next decade. Since both
suppliers and buyers hold to the "no failures in orbit" dictum, quality
is a given. In order to meet these challenges, the firm will have
to shift from its engineering driven culture to a more disciplined
manufacturing culture. In addition, best use must be made of
facilities in the United Kingdom and China. The problems posed in
the case include how to: position the company for the next
decade, make the best use of its resources and manage the change in
culture.
