SSHRC: Applicants who receive a 4A designation in SSHRC research funding competitions are entitled to apply for a $3000 grant to help them improve their next application. Applications for workshops, conferences, etc., or at the letter of intent stage are not eligible for a Laurier Research Seed Grant. Applicants for these competitions are encouraged to apply for any applicable internal grant program.
NSERC: Applicants who are unsuccessful in an NSERC competition but who receive a "Strong" score in at least two of the three categories (Excellence of Research, Merit of Proposal, Training of HQP) are entitled to apply for a $3000 grant to help them improve their next application. Applications for I2I, Engage or similar industry-focused competitions are not eligible for a Laurier Research Seed Grant. Applicants for these competitions are encouraged to talk to one of the University-Industry Liaison Officers about other funding opportunities.
CIHR: Applicants who are unsuccessful in a CIHR research funding competition (e.g., Operating Grant) but who receive a score greater than 3.5, the minimal fundable score at CIHR, are entitled to apply for a $3000 grant to help the improve their next application.
Applicants must apply for the seed grant within 6 months of the original Tri-agency decision.
Recipients of Laurier seed funding must submit another external grant application within 18 months of the previous decision.
Funds are to be used to support research. Travel funds must be for travel for research purposed, not for conference presentations. Up to $750 can be used for non-disposable equipment used to acquire data, such as audio/video recorders.
Applicants must submit their comments and ranking from the unsuccessful competition with their application, explaining how the proposed activities will lead to improvements as suggested by the reviewers.
Applicants can only apply for a seed grant two years in a row.
Applicants cannot receive a seed grant and a Laurier short term research grant for the same project.
