Invisible lives: The experiences of parents receiving child protective services (CPS)

Research report presented at the 'Finding A Fit' Conference, Waterloo, August 27, 2003
Maiter, S., Palmer, S., & Manji, S.

published: 2003 | Research publication | Full length research report

This paper presents findings from an exploratory, qualitative study of 61 parents receiving CPS. Semi-structured, in-depth interviewing was used to understand both life experiences of the parents and their experiences of intervention. The findings suggest that parents experience many barriers to providing for their children adequately, while CPS does not respond adequately to their needs. Parents have mixed reactions to CPS. Although they had negative reactions to CPS, they were also appreciative of the help they received.  (Summary version of report also available.)
