Digital Video Editing: 101 & 201


An Introduction to Editing Digital Video

Video as a medium is becoming the number one way to market oneself via the Internet. YouTube reports that one hour of video is uploaded every minute. Knowing how to produce video content is becoming less of a niche skill and more of a common language of commerce. Continuing Studies and the professionals at ADVIDEO have partnered to offer a hands-on opportunity to learn methods and techniques of editing to industry standards as well as how to create video content that is sure to stand out in the market place. 

Some of the topics covered in Digital Video Editing 101 and 201:

  • basics of Mac computers
  • the Final Cut Pro 7 interface (industry standard software)
  • cutting match on action
  • basic DSLR operation and videography tips
  • cutting dialogue 
  • advanced trimming using the roll slip and slide tools
  • importing and exporting of footage 
  • colour correction
  • adding transitions 
  • editing and syncing footage from two cameras
  • working with audio
  • multi-frame (split screen) editing
  • basics of key-framing
  • working with clients on and off camera

About the Instructor 

Jeff Thompson majored in Fine Arts and Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, he also received an advanced diploma from Sheridan College's post-graduate course Advanced Television and Film. 

Since being out of school he has worked as a professional video editor and videographer on a variety of projects. Some of these projects included helping to produce and post-produce over 50 episodes for the Food Diva cooking show. He has worked on large video contracts for the provincial government  that were 40 minutes in duration and on digital signage for pharmaceutical companies that were only 15 seconds in length. Jeff is proficient in a variety of programs including Final Cut Pro 7, Avid, Premiere, After Effects, Motion 5, Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop and Maya.

Currently Jeff teaches two courses which cover video editing, compositing, special effects, video production and animation for the Film Studies program at Laurier. 

In addition to teaching, Jeff is a post-production supervisor and editor at ADVIDEO's world headquarters. ADVIDEO specializes in online video production for businesses of any size and industry. Some of ADVIDEO's bigger clients include Yellow Media, VideoTron, Yahoo and the Chambers of Commerce. Jeff has personally edited over 300 videos through ADVIDEO and this practical knowledge gives him a very specialized understanding of how to market to specific business types on the web.  

Jeff enjoys both staying up-to-date with the video industry and teaching students what he has learned.


Withdrawal and Refund Policy

  • notice of withdrawal must be made in writing to Continuing Studies in-person, by mail, or by email
  • a full tuition refund, less 25 percent, will be issued when notice of withdrawal is received up to two weeks prior to the start of the first class
  • after the first class, no refunds will be issued

Please note that no refund of any sort will be given if the university is closed for any reason during your course.


Course Cancellation

Wilfrid Laurier University reserves the right to cancel a course in which there is insufficient enrollment. In the event of a cancellation, students will be informed and all fees will be refunded.
