Basis and Timing of Early Conditional Offers of Admission for Current Ontario Secondary School Applicants

In January, Wilfrid Laurier University will begin to extend conditional offers of admission to qualified applicants. The earliest admission decisions will be based on the best five Grade 11 U or M grades. It is likely that additional conditions will have to be met at this early stage, including minimum grades in program-specific prerequisite course requirements.

The next round of admission decisions, commencing in April, will be based on the best six of a combined final or mid-term Grade 12U, 12M and/or Grade 11U or M (final grade only) average. This average must include a minimum of three Grade 12U and/or Grade 12M final or mid-term marks. In all cases, applicants must meet the specific Grade 12U course requirements for each program.

In May, admission decisions will normally be based on the best six of a combined mid-term or final Grade 12U and/or Grade 12M average unless otherwise noted (i.e., some programs include prerequisite courses in admission average calculations). In all cases, applicants must meet the specific Grade 12U course requirements for each program.

Applicants who are not eligible for a conditional offer of admission based on a combined mid-term or final Grade 12U and/or Grade 12M average, may request to be considered again based on final Grade 12U and/or Grade 12M marks, provided space is still available in the program requested.

General Information for Applicants

  1. An overall average of 70 percent on six Grade 12U and/or Grade 12M courses is the minimum required for admission consideration. However, higher averages will be required for admission to individual programs in which the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the supply of places available in those programs.
  2. A minimum of 60 percent is required for all prerequisite courses unless otherwise specified.
  3. The length of time taken by an applicant to complete the OSSD will not of itself be a determining factor in the admission decision.
  4. Wilfrid Laurier University encourages highschool students to achieve as much breadth of preparation as possible in the course of their studies leading to the OSSD while also meeting the stated admission requirements of the post-secondary program to which they intend to apply.
  5. Grade IX Practical combined with grade III Harmony, RCM or the equivalent, will be accepted as one OAC or Grade 12M music credit for admission. Submit appropriate documentation to your high school for official conversion.
  6. Wilfrid Laurier University adheres to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training.
  7. It is expected that secondary schools will report students' standing to the university in terms of percentage marks for admission and scholarship selection purposes.
  8. Applicants must fulfill all requirements outlined on their Offer of Admission and successfully complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. A student who receives an offer of admission based on grade 11, early or mid-term grades, and whose final grades have already been submitted, must still meet final conditions, as stated on their Offer of Admission. Note: The University reserves the right to withdraw its Offer of Admission if these requirements are not completely satisfied.

Deferring Year 1 Full-Time Admission

Deferrals may be considered for high school applicants to first year undergraduate degree programs, excluding the Faculty of Music.

You must provide official documentation identifying extenuating circumstances (e.g. medical issues). Deferrals are not granted for financial reasons. Please submit the Deferral Request form.

All conditions on the original offer of admission must be satisfied before a deferral will be granted. 

The deferment may not exceed one academic year and is allowable only for the original program offered and confirmed by the student through OUAC.

Applicants wishing to defer admission must submit the deferral request form along with their documentation to the Admissions Office by August 1st. If you are granted a deferral, you must re-apply through OUAC (105 application form) and contact the Admissions Office by April 1 of the following year in order to reactivate your admission status.

Applicants who enrol in academic courses outside of Wilfrid Laurier University during the period of deferment will void their offer of admission. They will then be required to re-apply through the OUAC and disclose any new academic information.

Note: Entrance Scholarships and Entrance Bursaries will not be deferred. Eligibility for an entrance scholarship will be assessed for the new entry point.
