Research CentresResearch activity at Laurier is expanding rapidly, with an increasing number of faculty earning national and international reputations in their areas of expertise. To facilitate and encourage research, the following research centres have been established. These centres create a focus for research by a group of scholars and provide a research environment to stimulate and nurture the research training of graduate students. Anchors
Director: Dr. Bruce McConomy, bmcconom@wlu.ca, ext. 2890 The CA/WLU Centre for Accounting Research and Education has been established to promote excellence in research and teaching, and to encourage knowledge development in accounting education and practice. Our vision is to enhance the scholarly activities of accounting related faculty and to foster the development of the highest quality accounting graduates. The Centre’s mission is to support the scholarly activities and research efforts of WLU accounting related faculty and to build upon our record of producing highly successful graduates. This will be achieved by facilitating access of WLU accounting related faculty to research opportunities and outlets, by encouraging students to assist faculty in knowledge development and by promoting the enhancement of WLU accounting programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Centre will also support curriculum development projects to help ensure that the WLU accounting curriculum evolves to reflect the changing education requirements as set out in publications such as the CA Candidates’ Competency Map. Director: Dr. Laura MacDonald, Associate Professor (Accounting) In 2003, the Schlegel Centre for Entrepreneurship was designated as a CMA Canada Centre of Excellence in Management Accounting for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises. It is the only facility of its kind in Canada. This initiative is part of a 10-year agreement between CMA Canada and the School of Business & Economics aimed at expanding the boundaries of management accounting and enhancing the competitiveness of Canadian small businesses. Director: Dr. Lee Willingham, Associate Professor, Faculty of Music, lwillingham@wlu.ca, ext. 3621 The mission of the Laurier Centre for the Advancement of Music in the Community (LcMc) is to provide a scholarly research environment that considers and explores the musical lives of people in the community, and the resulting applications of musical practice on people and institutions. The fundamental belief that music has many meanings and takes many forms is central to the philosophy of LcMc. Director: Todd Ferretti, PhD, tferretti@wlu.ca,ext. 2986 In the 1960's Cognitive Psychology emerged as one of the dynamic and fruitful areas of research in the behavioural sciences. Important models of memory, language, and perception, to name a few, were developed over the next 30 years. Although this work provided many important insights about the behavioural and computational processes underlying perception and cognition no account was made about how these processes were actually instantiated in the brain. To gain a complete understanding of how "people think" one needs to understand the brain processes that are ultimately responsible for the various processes identified by Cognitive Psychology. Director: Dr. Terry Mitchell, Associate Professor of Psychology, tmitchell@wlu.ca, ext. 3494 Centre for Community Research, Learning and Action (CCRLA) is a Research Centre within Laurier's Community Psychology program, in the Faculty of Science. CCRLA partners with organizations and communities to promote understanding and action on community issues. The mandate is to promote strong community-university collaborative research partnerships to advance community health and social justice. Director: Professor Terry Copp, 519-884-0710, ext. 3309 The Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies (LCMSDS) was founded in 1991 to foster research, teaching and public discussion of military and strategic issues of national and international significance. The research activities of the centre are multidisciplinary, with concentrations in military history and in the strategic analysis of defence operations, including peacekeeping and arms control. The strategy component emphasizes the use of formal methods to analyze strategic problems and find practical solutions. The history component focuses on the armed forces of Canada and the conflicts in which they have been engaged. The LCMSDS supports, as well, classroom teaching and other educational activities in several departments, including history, mathematics and political science. Director: Heidi Ahonen-Eerikainen, ext. 2431 The Laurier Centre for Music Therapy Research (LCMTR) is the first university-based centre in Canada and only the fourth in the world. The overall focus of the centre will be to strengthen and shape the status of professional music therapy and music therapy research in Canada. The LCMTR will create a synergy among the research team members' areas of expertise, combining approaches and theoretical models to further the study of music therapy and its impact throughout the world. The LCMTR will provide a context for a wide variety of research and educational initiatives, involving and ultimately benefiting undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students, and music therapy professionals and researches in music therapy and allied disciplines. Director: Dr. Barry Colbert, Assistant Professor, Policy & Strategic Management (SBE) Director: Dr. Greg Irving, Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management (SBE) The mandate for the Centre for Strategic Leadership (CSL) is to serve as a focal point for strategic leadership grant proposal development and research. CSL aims to place WLU at the forefront of leadership research by acting as a focal point for research in leadership. It will a) promote WLU's considerable expertise and accomplishments in leadership related scholarship (e.g., expertise in developing and managing human capital in the Management and Organizational Behavior Area in SBE) and b) expand our capacity for strategic leadership research by: encouraging and coordinating interdisciplinary theoretical and applied leadership research (e.g., assisting with the development of research proposals); publishing an interdisciplinary strategic leadership working paper series; organizing and hosting a strategic leadership conference, roundtables, and speaker series to help network academic scholars, members of the business community, and government. Director: Dr. Benson Honig,Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management (SBE), ext. 2909 Director: Dr. Kevin Hendricks, Professor of Operations Management (SBE) The Centre for Supply Chain Management (SMC), located within the School of Business & Economics (SBE), has the primary function of facilitating and coordinating research in supply chain management. The Centre ensures regular and useful communication between researchers and practitioners including strategic decision makers in supply chain management. The purpose of each communication (seminars/conferences/roundtable) is to ensure that relevant topics are well researched and the researched findings are disseminated in timely fashion to those who can use them. Related activities of the Centre include assisting in the development of educations materials (BBA/MBA/PhD levels) and training initiatives with the Laurier community. Cold Regions Research CentreDirector: Dr. Richard Petrone, ext. 3744, rpetrone@wlu.ca The mandate of the Cold Regions Research Centre is to facilitate research and teaching about cold regions. Where possible, interdisciplinary research is encouraged. Membership in the centre extends to professors in several departments at Laurier and the University of Waterloo, and government research institutions in other provinces and the Northwest Territories. Current research by graduate students, professors and research scientists associated with the centre focus on cold regions hydrology, glaciology, geomorphology and resource management in diverse cold regions environments including Pakistan, the Canadian Arctic and subarctic, Alaska and the Yukon, the Rocky Mountains and the northern temperate region of Ontario's Canadian Shield. Director: Dr. Madhu Kalimipalli, Associate Professor (Finance - SBE) The School of Business & Economics formed the Financial Services Research Centre to promote research on Canadian Capital Markets and Financial Institutions, and to develop stronger links between finance academics and practitioners in the financial sector. Director, LISPOP: Steven Brown, PhD, sdbrown@wlu.ca, ext. 3895 The Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy studies issues pertaining to the creation, use and representation of public opinion in the policy process. The institute serves as a catalyst to promote individual and collaborative research on these issues. In addition, the institute monitors the practices and claims of the public opinion and interest group industries, and serves as an educational resource to the university and the larger community on questions and issues pertaining to those claims and practices. Director: Dr. William Morrison, Associate Professor of Economics (SBE) Laurier Centre for Economic Research and Policy Analysis (LCERPA) is based in the School of Business & Economics to serve as a focal point for research into economic policy at Laurier. The mission of the Centre is to develop and sponsor research in the area of economic policy. The centre will undertake three types of activities: 1) support of research through grants that primarily release faculty from teaching time; 2) sponsoring two conferences per year each investigating a different area of economic policy; and 3) sponsoring a working paper series. The Centre may become a focal point for visiting scholars and post-doctoral students. Director: Quincy Almeida, PhD, qalmeida@wlu, ext. 2840 The Movement Disorders Research & Rehabilitation Centre (MDRC) will conduct research into movement disorders, predominately those found in individuals with Parkinson's disease. The centre conducts research that has immediate and direct impact on individuals in our community. Research foci include investigation of brain function, evaluation of internationally developed treatment strategies and devices, and the development of exercise rehabiliation for the alleviation of disease symptoms. Director: Dr. Pierre Siklos, ext. 2559 The centre fosters multidisciplinary research on new and dynamic
issues facing Europe in the 21st century. Relevant topics of research
include European integration, regional development, external linkages,
trade and political expansion as well as other overarching
socio-economic problems. The centre also focuses on the so-called
accession countries, that is, the countries that recently joined the
European Community and how they relate to the older established
