Understanding Popular Culture

Students will explore the major themes, topics and methods that characterize the study of representation and the social production of meaning through signs and symbols. Different forms of popular culture will be discussed as illustrations of the social production of meaning. Possible topics for discussion include music videos, movies, new media, sports, dance, food, community festivals and fashion.
