Slavery and Emancipation in the United States

This course examines the history of American slavery, beginning with the arrival of the first slaves in Virginia in 1619, and concludes with the process of emancipation during and following the Civil War. Themes include: the development of slavery, slave economies, and African-American culture in the American colonies, and later, the United States. Topics include: the gradual abolition of slavery in northern states, slave society and culture in the South, anti-slavery activity in antebellum America, emancipation and Reconstruction. {P} {S}
