Master of DivinityThe MDiv involves 30 courses. Students in the contextual option must also complete one unit of Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) plus a 9-12 month period of Internship. Students who complete a major portion of their MDiv program through part-time studies prior to becoming full-time students may find that scheduling conflicts can develop which would lengthen their total program. The requirements for admission include a bachelor's degree (normally with a minimum grade point average of B) from a recognized accredited university or university college. Students who are taking the contextual component of the program are required to obtain, before the end of their first term, endorsement as acceptable ministry candidates by the church of which they are a member. Continuance in the contextual component of the MDiv program after the first term is contingent upon the maintenance of such an endorsement. Supervised Pastoral Education: The 12-week SPE course is taken during the summer after the first or second academic year. Students who can demonstrate an equivalency of this requirement may apply to Academic Administrative Committee for the waiver of the SPE requirement. Internship: Students preparing for the professional ministry must meet the internship and/or field education requirements of the church of which they are a member. Students preparing for the ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada must successfully complete an internship. This is normally taken after the third year. Contextual Education: Students taking the contextual components of the program are required to be involved satisfactorily in the life of a congregation. Placements are arranged through the supervisor of contextual education. Coursework Option: Students admitted to the Master of Divinity program are admitted to the coursework option. The MDiv involves 30 courses. Students in the contextual option must also complete one unit of Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) plus a 9-12 month period of Internship. Note: some core ministry courses will only be offered every other year. Thesis Option: At the end of the second year of studies, students may petition to be admitted to the thesis option by submitting a thesis proposal. Admission to the thesis option is on approval of the thesis proposal by the Academic Administrative Committee. Guidelines for the proposal are available at the Seminary Office. Students admitted to the thesis option will complete TH680C - Senior Research Project: Master of Divinity Thesis I and TH680D - Senior Research Project: Master of Divinity Thesis II, normally during their last year of study. In addition to successfully completing the academic courses, students must be deemed capable of assuming the professional responsibilities of the ordained ministry in order to be recommended for ordination by the faculty. Students who do not demonstrate this competence may be required by the principal-dean of the Seminary to withdraw from the MDiv program.
1 Supervised pastoral education may be taken following either year 1 or year 2 of the program. This is not required for students pursuing the non-contextual option. |
