BI216 Human Physiology I - Homeostasis, Control & Communication 0.5 Credit - Fall
An introduction to human physiology and the concept of homeostasis, defined as the ability of the human body to maintain a relatively constant internal environment. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding physiological mechanisms of control and communication in the body by the nervous and endocrine systems. The importance of these systems will be illustrated by examining their roles in the co-ordination of energy metabolism and growth, reproduction and muscle function. Laboratories will use problem-based approaches and collaborative learning to illustrate theoretical and practical concepts, and combine computer simulations with hands on experimentation in the lab, as well as recording physiological data from human volunteers.
