International political economists assume that looking at politics or economics in isolation can only give us a partial understanding of global politics. Therefore, this course focuses on the interrelationship between political authority, the exercise of power, and the accumulation of wealth, with special emphasis on the ways states intervene in markets and the ways markets affect a state's ability to make policy.
