Normative Issues and the Role of the State
A course designed to develop a critical perspective on the manner in which normative issues in politics and economics intersect with the workings of larger political institutions, especially the state. Two broad questions structure the course. First, what is the best way to characterize the relation between the individual and the state, and how does this relation affect our understanding of the obligations each has to the other? Second, how should the state respond to the unequal distribution of benefits and burdens among the members of the relevant political community?
