Teaching Methods: Vocal and Instrumental Music
This course will provide opportunities to explore and develop theoretical and practical skill of teaching music at the adolescent level, with an emphasis placed upon the development of musicianship and artistry, and the creating of classroom learning conditions that enable students to tap their own creative and musical expression. TECs will develop a professional working-knowledge of implementing curriculum, assessing, evaluating, grading and reporting student growth in music, and the resources required to teach music at this level. Topics include: (1) teaching and assessing creativity, performance, music theory and analysis; (2) approaches to teaching vocal and instrumental music (e.g., choral conducting, voice methods, wind band and percussion, strings, keyboard, guitar, computer and digital applications); (3) principles of conducting and performance; and (4) curriculum development, integration, resources and materials.
