This course probes the historical, social and political foundations of journalism's democratic mission with special attention to contemporary challenges facing the medium and its democratic goals. Students will read key texts in political theory, political economy and communications studies, and debate what "democracy" means, and deliberate what constitutes a free and democratic press.
