Comedy and Romance in Hellenistic Literature

Comedy and romance in Greek literature from the time of Alexander the Great to the Roman annexation of Egypt, as well as a discussion of the influence of Athenian New Comedy. While there will be an emphasis on lyric poetry (Callimachus and Theocritus), epic (Apollonius of Rhodes), mime (Herodas), the origin of the ancient Greek novel will also be discussed. (All readings in English translation.)
