Ali Zaidi is a comparative social theorist interested in fundamental questions on not only religious fundamentalism, but also fundamental questions about religion in a post secular, global age. More specifically, he focused on the assumptions underlying our knowledge of Islam and modernity. In 2011, his book Islam, Modernity and the Human Sciences was published. It argues that the human sciences such as sociology, anthropology, and political science, which are all rooted in traditions of critique, may actually hinder our attempt at intercultural understanding and dialogue since they often preemptively dismiss notions of the Sacred.
