Backed by SSHRC and Canadian Institute of Geomatics scholarships, Niem Tu Huynh studied Geographic Information Systems (GIS) extensively in her time at Laurier. At the Master’s level she looked at mental mapping and GIS, while at the Ph.D level, she examined relationships between GIS and geography education. Tu Huynh travelled to Vietnam as part of the Canada Corps University Partnership program and to explore research potentials for her Ph.D work. At the 2009 convocation, she received the graduate gold medal for Doctor of Philosophy (Faculty of Arts) and the Governor General's academic gold medal.
