People at Laurier

Stephen MacNeil, Department of Chemistry Stephen MacNeil is an associate professor who teaches organic chemistry – the study of compounds that make up the medicine we take, the shampoos we use and the food we eat. MacNeil is dedicated to showing his students that while organic chemistry is complex (there are more than six million known organic compounds to study) it is important to everyday life. To make organic chemistry more accessible to undergraduates, MacNeil implements innovative teaching and formative assessment techniques that improve learning outcomes by allowing students to accept more responsibility for their own learning. For these efforts, in part, MacNeil was the recipient of Laurier’s 2011 Teaching Award of Excellence.
