For Deena Mandell, an associate professor in the Faculty of Social Work, it is important that the classroom is a place where students are comfortable thinking out loud, asking questions, engaging in dialogue with one another and taking risks. Her previous research focused on the interfaces between families and larger systems, including the justice system, health services and child welfare. Currently, her work focuses on educational methodologies for social work in the contemporary context. She has developed faculty supports for student writing and intercultural learning, and also teaches in the LALL program and the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program.
