Brent Hagerman completed his PhD in Religion and Culture in February 2011, writing a critical biography of dancehall reggae artist and Rastafarian King Yellowman. His research examined moral regulation in Rastafari and in reggae music, particularly as it applies to the discourse around “slackness” (sexually explicit material). Hagerman travelled to Kingston, Jamaica to interview Yellowman and followed the artist on tour from Chicago to Toronto armed with a video camera, a digital audio recorder and a camper trailer. A musician himself, Hagerman performs with soul-reggae band the Baudelaires and Latin American band Mendo.
